The future of dairy farming is bright, driven by a new generation of passionate and innovative young leaders. To help nurture this growth, OHS Feeding and Storage proudly sponsors a bursary for students in the Dairy Program at the University of Guelph’s Ridgetown campus. One of this year’s recipients comes from a family deeply rooted in farming who embody the values of hard work, resilience, and a commitment to sustainable agriculture—values that echo throughout the farming community.
Cassey Roth is currently in her second semester of an Associate Diploma in Agriculture at the University of Guelph’s Ridgetown campus. She grew up in Eastern Ontario on her family’s dairy farm, where she and her three sisters have been actively involved from a young age. The family milks 110 cows in a tie-stall barn, and Cassey’s contribution extends beyond milking to helping with fieldwork and machinery maintenance. “Growing up on a dairy farm taught me hard work and resilience, and gave me a deep connection to the land,” Cassey shared. “It’s where I developed my love for nature and cows.”
Cassey’s decision to pursue agriculture as a career was deeply influenced by her upbringing, her (very proud!) father is long-time OHS customer Casey Roth. “Farming is a family tradition,” she said. “But more than that, it’s my passion and my life. I wanted to learn more about the industry and the various farming methods, which is why I chose to study at Ridgetown. I can’t see myself doing anything else.”
Cassey’s background has also shaped her views on the agricultural industry. She has learned that relationships with other agricultural professionals are important, managing communities are crucial, and that as a farmer, “you have no control over the weather!!” She adds, “farming is full of family-owned operations striving to improve, grow, and produce sustainably.”

Looking to the future, Cassey believes that technology and innovation will play a pivotal role in farming. “Technology will make farming more efficient, sustainable, and faster,” she said. “It will allow for a better work-life balance for farmers and their families.” She envisions using these advancements on her family farm, where she plans to return after her graduation. “We hope to incorporate robots for feeding and milking to grow the farm,” Cassey said. “Our goals include improving our herd’s health and overall quality.” In a drive toward sustainability, she mentions exploring ways the farm can create their own wood shavings for bedding.
Cassey’s commitment to agriculture doesn’t stop with her own aspirations. She encourages other students passionate about farming to learn as much as possible from others in the industry. “Working on different farms and observing various practices will give you firsthand experience and insights for your own operation,” she advised.
OHS Feeding and Storage recognizes the importance of supporting students in today’s challenging economic climate. This year, the University of Guelph was able to present students with awards totalling almost $58,000, thanks to the generous help and support of companies like OHS Feeding and Storage. With rising prices and inflation tightening students’ budgets, these bursary awards truly make a difference in students’ academic lives.
It is important to note that bursary winners are selected based on essays they submit and OHS Feeding and Storage has no input in the selection process. This ensures a fair and unbiased approach to recognizing deserving students.
OHS Feeding and Storage is proud to support students like Cassey, who represent the next generation of leaders in agriculture. Her story is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and community support in shaping the future of farming.
Congratulations to all the winners!
